On Wednesday afternoon, Old Lyme, seeded #22, advanced to the quarter-finals of the CIAC Class S Baseball Tournament with an impressive 5-0 win over #6 seeds Coventry. Old Lyme now face #3 Somers away on Saturday at a time to be announced.
Aidan Ward led the the Lyme-Old Lyme Wildcats to victory by throwing a seven-inning complete game with a two-hit shutout while striking out three and walking none.
Jack Porter also made a major contribution to the game with a fully extended, diving catch in the outfield to prevent an extra base hit. Additionally, he started both rallies while singling with two outs for both of his hits with no one on base. Moreover, he scored after getting on base both times.
Riley Warecke (1-3; 1 RBI) had a double in the top of the third inning to put Lyme-Old Lyme on the board first. Porter scored after a two-out single placed him on base.
Lyme-Old Lyme scored three runs in the fifth inning. Grady Lacourciere (1-4; 1 RBI) and Owen Snurkowski (2-4; 2 RBI) all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Santiago Rodriguez had an RBI sac fly to score Casey Hurtgen after he (Hurtgen) started the inning off with a stand-up triple.
Lyme-Old Lyme had eight hits. Snurkowski and Porter (2-3) each had multiple hits for Lyme-Old Lyme Wildcats.
Softball
On Wednesday, the LOL Wildcats, seeded #5, advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIAC Class S Softball Tournament with a close 4-3 win over #12 seeds Coginchaug.
Grace Phaneuf scored the winning run in the 7th inning.
Lyme-Old Lyme now meets #4 Lyman Memorial in Friday’s quarterfinals at a time to be announced.
