OLD LYME — Noting, “It’s hard to believe at time,” Don Bugbee started his 27th season as coach of the Lyme-Old Lyme High School Girl’s Varsity Basketball team on Thursday, Dec. 16, with a game away against Coginchaug.
Sadly, the girls lost 50-42 but bounced back on Saturday (Dec. 18) with a thrilling 36-34 victory at home over St Bernard (2-1.)
Sophomore Ava Roth scored nine points, while junior Alexis Fenton added eight. Freshmen Kelly Sheehan and Kate Walsh added six points apiece, and senior Megan Loflin notched not only five points but also made 11 rebounds.
The Wildcats record now stands at 1-1.
After the game, Bugbee said, “After our season opening game loss to Coginchaug, the team regrouped and played tough versus St Bernard.
He commented, “It was a hard-fought contest between two evenly-matched teams, with each team having the chance to win at the end.”
On Wednesday, Dec. 22, Portland travels to Old Lyme with a varsity tip-off at p.m. and JV at 5:30 p.m.
The JV team record also stands at 1-1 after a 30-23 loss against Coginchaug and a 36-14 win over St Bernard.
