OLD LYME—UPDATED 4/9 with new information from the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme: Churches in Lyme and Old Lyme are observing Easter/Holy Saturday and Easter Day in the following ways:
Christ The King Catholic Church
On Holy Saturday, April 19, at 12 p.m. in the narthex, all are invited to bring a basket of their own goodies for the Blessing of the Easter Food, a tradition that dates back to 12th-century Poland.
There is no 5 pm Mass on this Saturday; the Easter Vigil Mass will start at 8 p.m. This service begins in the dark. At a fire outside, the Paschal candle is lit and brought into the church, and from it smaller candles are lit until the entire church is glowing from the light of the congregation’s candles.
Special readings and music mark this liturgy, which features the full choir along with organ, timpani, and bells. The Gloria is sung; the Exsultet is proclaimed; and baptismal promises are renewed.

On Good Friday, April, 18, the Annual Good Friday Community Cross Walk will be held starting promptly at 8 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come join the participants for the walk as a literal Cross is carried through town. Start at St. Bridget’s Church 75 Moodus-Leesville Road Moodus. There will be seven stops including a new Church at each location. While walking, the ‘Seven Last Words’ will unfold. You are welcome to walk the five miles with frequent places to rest or you can drive ahead. There will be a person driving along to check and see if anyone needs a ride. All ages are welcome to attend this day. If you are so moved, you can join in by carrying the Cross. We will end at St. Stephen’s Church at 31 Main Street East Haddam with soup and bread. If you have any questions, call Kathy at (860)873-1830 who is the event Chair.
On Easter Sunday, April 20, a joyful service will be held at 10 a.m. This year, it is again hoped a quartet of singers will serve as section leaders for an Anthem on Easter morning.
