OLD LYME—On Friday, Dec. 13, Lyme-Old Lyme VFW Post 1467 Senior Vice Commander (SVC) Susan Lessard, who also serves as the Voice of Democracy/Patriot Pen Chairman, attended the VFW District 4 meeting. She subsequently announced that Lyme-Old Lyme High School (LOLHS) Junior Maggie Thuma was awarded first place in the Voice of Democracy essay contest and will advance to the state competition later this month.
Winners from state contests are entered in the national competition for which there is a $35,000 grand prize.
Elizaveta Gregoire earned second place, which is an outstanding achievement, but unfortunately, only first place awardees moves forward.
Ava Fuller of Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School earned a third place finish for her Patriot Pen essay, which was another well-deserved success.
Two hundred and ten essays were submitted to the Voice of Democracy essay contest from LOLHS this year.
Lessard wrote to the teachers and school administrators expressing her, “Gratitude for the incredible support and effort they put into preparing the students which clearly played a key role in their success.”
Lessard will serve as VFW Post 1467’s Commander next year. Previously she has served as Acting Superintendent of Norwich Schools.
