Lyme Library Programs Explore 2007-08 Financial Crisis, Presentation by Axilrod Tonight

July 24, 2015 by admin

Margin Call movie posterThe Friends of the Lyme Public Library are hosting two linked programs this coming Thursday and Friday, July 23 and 24, which examine the same topic – the credit crisis of 2007-08. The first is a film and the second a presentation.

On Thursday, July 23, at 6 p.m. the film, “Margin Call” will be shown. The movie will provide a basis for the discussion of the financial crisis of 2007-2008 and the recovery to date, which will be held on Friday, July 24.

Rotten Tomatoes includes the following description in its review: “Set in the high-stakes world of the financial industry, Margin Call is an entangling thriller involving the key players at an investment firm during one perilous 24-hour period in the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis. When an entry-level analyst unlocks information that could prove to be the downfall of the firm, a roller-coaster ride ensues as decisions both financial and moral catapult the lives of all involved to the brink of disaster.”

The Rotten Tomatoes review concludes, “Writer/director J.C. Chandor’s enthralling first feature is a stark and bravely authentic portrayal of the financial industry and its denizens as they confront the decisions that shape our global future.”

The cast includes Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Paul Bentany and Demi Moore.

The film will be shown in the library community room starting at 6 p.m. and be followed by a brief discussion. Register at the library.

If you wish, you may order a sandwich with salad, chips, cookies and juice for $13 (paid in advance). It will be available at 5:30 p.m. Information and sign up are available at the library desk.

The following day, Friday, July 24, at 7 p.m., Lyme resident Steve Axilrod will give a presentation titled, “Economic policy in the wake of the destructive credit crisis of 2007-08: how we got where we are now and the shape of the future.”

The Library Friends comment, “We are fortunate to have Steve Axilrod as a presenter. He is a former top staff policy official at the Federal Reserve System headquartered in Washington DC, a senior officer at the U.S. affiliate of a major Japanese securities firm in New York City and subsequently a consultant on policy to central banks in emerging markets abroad and on financial conditions to market participants here.” Axilrod recently authored books on monetary policy and related issues published by the MIT and Oxford University Press.

There will be a wine and cheese reception following the presentation. Register at the library by calling (860-434-2272) or emailing [email protected]
