LYME—On Sunday, Jan. 12, from 3 to 4:15 p.m., a presentation and workshop will be held titled, “Starting Pollinator Plants from Seed.” The event, which is co-sponsored by the Lyme Pollinator Pathway, Lyme Grange CT 147 and Lyme Garden Club, will take place at Lyme Grange Hall, 2 Sterling City Rd. in Lyme.
Lyme Pollinator Pathway is an initiative of the Lyme SustainableCT Committee.
The presentation organizers note that including native plants in your garden is the best way to help local pollinators. They suggest attendees consider expanding their plantings inexpensively by growing them from seed.
A slide presentation will be given, highlighting how different germination requirements exist for specific kinds of seeds, and how to plant a seed selection to cold-stratify over the winter. Proper after-care will also be discussed.
Save and bring your empty gallon plastic jugs (a few will be available for those without), a good pair of scissors/shears to cut the plastic, and gloves. Other materials will be supplied.
Jim Sirch, retired Education Coordinator for the Yale Peabody Museum, is on the board of the Hamden Land Conservation Trust and Vice President of the CT Horticultural Society.
A certified CT Master Gardener, Sirch gives talks throughout the state on gardening for pollinators, and is dedicated to helping improve backyard biodiversity.
