OLD LYME—Are you ready to ditch the Halloween Jack o’ Lantern? Are your decorative pumpkins getting a bit soft?
Chuck ‘em into the Lyme-Old Lyme Food Share Garden (LOLFSG) compost pile on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The LOLFSG is collecting pumpkins again this year. But this time, there’s a twist … and a trebuchet.
Mike Hansen, LOLFSG board member, is building a machine specifically for hurling pumpkins! Bring your pumpkin(s) to christen the inaugural voyage or “launch” of the trebuchet.
Each year, millions of pumpkins in the United States are incorporated in holiday decorations. A significant percentage of these pumpkins are discarded into landfills where much of their valuable organic matter is lost.
The LOLFSG is collecting unpainted pumpkins of any shape, size, or condition on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the garden from 9 am to noon. Pumpkins or gourds can be dropped off in front of the field house at Town Woods Park or brought to the trebuchet at the rear of the garden.
Pumpkins will be incorporated into the garden’s compost system, adding valuable nutrients to the mixture as they decompose. The compost will be used in the spring to grow produce that will be donated to the local food pantries and kitchens.
The LOLFSG is located at Town Woods Park, behind the field house and playground.
