Letter to the Editor: Consensus Clear That Halls Rd. is an Eyesore, But How Do We Really Want it to Look?

May 27, 2023 by William Folland

To the Editor:

I took this photo (above) of the mixed use development to the Main Street in South Portland, Maine. This could be a blueprint for Halls Road if the Halls Road Improvements Committee (HRIC) zoning changes are adopted.

Halls Road is and will always be a service road not an area for residential development. Any development should be limited to service oriented business, examples being health care facilities, urgent care facility as well as businesses that support the highways.

We all agree that Halls Road in its current configuration is an eyesore but overreacting and approving the HRIC proposed changes to zoning regulations may make a bad situation worse.

Sincerely,

William Folland
Old Lyme.

I guess I have to respond to this.

Who says that Halls Road will always be a “service road” . . . ? It’s not even a service road now. It doesn’t currently serve and support the highways.

We have a Big Y and a Walgreens.

The only glimmer of hope of is Long River Local. But we need much more of that.

It’s an eyesore that shows a complete lack of imagination that been ignored by the town for 50 years..

The HRIC is a well developed future looking plan that will benefit OL for generations. It’s a substantial improvement over current situation.

In regard to “It’s an eyesore that shows a complete lack of imagination that been ignored by the town for 50 years.”

      This isn’t fair or accurate.

The town has been showing a complete lack of imagination for at least 100 years, if not more.
