Lyme Art Association Presents Five-Part Virtual Lecture Series on ‘The Art of America,’ Concludes Tomorrow

OLD LYME — The Lyme Art Association presents a five-part, virtual art lecture series via Zoom on The Art of America: How Great American Artists Revealed a New Country and Its People. The series starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, and lectures will take place every Thursday in March at the same time.

Bob Potter, former Executive Director of the Lyme Art Association, will explore iconic art by leading artists from the mid-18th century to the early 20th century.

The virtual series begins with The Art of Colonial America (3/3) and continues with:

  • Westward Ho!, A Nation Divided (3/10)
  • A Nation Restored (3/17)
  • Charles Platt and the American Impressionists in Old Lyme (3/24)
  • America Boom and Bust (3/31).

Participants will learn about the artists and their work through visual images, videos, profiles of the artists, and the changing historical events and artistic movements of a new nation as it evolved through turbulent and transformative eras.

Register online for The Art of America at www.lymeartassociation.org. Each lecture is $10 or $40 for all five lectures. Registrants will be emailed a confirmation and the Zoom link for each lecture.

Lyme Art Association Executive Director Laurie Pavlos notes, “We are excited to present this lecture series on The Art of America in celebration of our 100th anniversary. All proceeds will go to the Lyme Art Association’s Second Century Capital Campaign, which will help fund the installation of a new skylight system to prevent water damage, support energy-efficient heating and cooling and the preservation of this historic building and gallery for the next 100 years.”

Bob Potter

Art Lecture Presenter Bob Potter is a former Executive Director of the Lyme Art Association. A graduate of Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts, he spent his early career as an art director at Scholastic Magazines, marketing director at Time Warner, National Geographic and AOL.

He helped create an innovative art therapy program for Save The Children, was a corporate development officer for the National Gallery of Art, headed marketing at the Mystic Seaport Museum, launched a professional development program for art students at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts and is a docent at the Yale Center for British Art.

Potter and his wife Jeanne, who is a master watercolor artist, live in Old Lyme, Conn.

The LAA was founded in 1914 by the American Impressionists and continues the tradition of exhibiting and selling representational artwork by its members and invited artists, as well as offering art instruction and lectures to the community.

The LAA is located at 90 Lyme Street, Old Lyme, CT in a building designed by Charles Adams Platt and located within the historic district.

Admission is free with contributions appreciated. Gallery hours ae Wednesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm, or by appointment.
