Bearing the heartfelt sympathies of the Town of Old Lyme in response to the Dec. 14 shooting tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a team of citizens led by Selectwoman Mary Jo Nosal headed out for Newtown, Conn., last Friday to deliver ornaments to the town hall there.
Former Old Lyme Selectman Mervin Roberts (second from right in photo above) represented the town and its First Responders. On arrival, he was asked by the Newtown Fire Captain to stand with other first responders present to honor that day’s funeral motorcades.
Also in attendance in the Old Lyme team were Althea Caulkins, whose daughter Michaela rides horses several times a week in Newtown, Nosal’s eldest daughter Caitlin and Caitlin’s friend from Fordham University, who is a Newtown resident.
Nosal told LymeLine, “We witnessed overwhelming sadness, kindness, professionalism, and bravery from people we encountered and spoke to — from the town Finance Director, Public Health Corporation Officer, and First Responders.”
She added, “I suggested to the Fire Captain that he consider bringing his team to the beach this year. He brightened and liked the thought as he was looking for ways to give his fire house some down time.”
Thank you to these good folk who braved torrential rain in order to carry in person the thoughts and sympathies of all of us in Old Lyme to the residents of Newtown.
