New Group Calls for Civic Engagement and Accountability at Rally for Women’s Rights, June 8

May 31, 2025 by Elizabeth Regan Leave a Comment

EAST LYME—Voices of Women (VOW) Southeast Connecticut will host a rally from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 8 at the Liberty Green in East Lyme to promote reproductive rights and civic participation, and to keep local leaders accountable to the public.

A press release from the group, which describes itself as a coalition of women and allies from East Lyme and neighboring towns, said the rally will include several speakers and a moderated question-and-answer panel discussion.

The group was founded in March to protect and advance the rights of women in southeastern Connecticut amid growing threats to civil liberties, according to the press release.

Speakers include:

  • Connecticut Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz
  • Connecticut Assistant Attorney General Anissa Klapproth
  • New London NAACP President Jean Jordan
  • East Lyme Deputy First Selectman Ann Cicchiello
  • A local high school junior who is also a transgender young woman

The speakers will address the need to protect women’s rights, safeguard reproductive freedom, amplify civic participation, and promote ethical, accountable leadership in local institutions, according to the group.

The event is free and open to the public.
