NEW LONDON, CT – On Saturday, Dec.  20 at 2 p.m., music lovers can experience Handel’s “Messiah” as it was originally heard when the Connecticut Early Music Society performs the full oratorio on period instruments at Connecticut College’s Harkness Chapel.

CEMS in a press release said that while many ensembles present highlights or selected movements of “Messiah” during the holidays, this performance offers the full sweeping arc of Handel’s masterpiece.

Ian Watson, CEMS artistic director, noted the unique impact of hearing the full work.

“There is something transformative about experiencing the entire ‘Messiah’ from beginning to end,” he said. “The story unfolds with a sense of drama, beauty, and hope that is especially moving during the holidays. Performing the work on period instruments gives the music an immediacy and color that audiences rarely hear today.”

“Messiah” features a renowned ensemble, exceptional soloists, and the Society’s commitment to historically informed performance.

Connecticut College’s Harkness Chapel is located at 270 Mohegan Ave. in New London.

Tickets are available at ctearlymusic.org for $45; student tickets are $10. The cost is $50 at the door.
