Moon-Inspired Exhibit by Old Lyme Artist on Display in New London Through July

NEW LONDON, CT – The Custom House Maritime Museum in New London is hosting the work of artist and designer Edith Twining in a mixed-media exhibit based on the 1923 poem “Moon Song.”

The panels in the exhibit use fabrics, lace, tin toys and personal collections to bring Mildred Plew Meigs’ poem to life. Twining credited “the moon’s reign over the tides” with inspiring her view of the world above and below the rolling waves.

The art evokes imagery from the poem including “lost baby stars,” “cold sea flowers,” and other dreamy fragments rendered in tactile form. The same panels comprise a 12-page limited-edition book, also titled Moon Song.

The show is on view at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank St., New London, through July. Museum admission is $10; youth 16 and under are $6; and families are $25. Admission is free for New London Maritime Society members, New London residents, U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets, active-duty military and their families, and visitors with a SNAP EBT card.
