Bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy an afternoon of community music celebrating America 250.

The Old Lyme Town Band, seen in this file photo on the Center School lawn in Old Lyme, will bring music to the Florence Griswold Museum on Sunday, June 14.

OLD LYME, CT – The Old Lyme Town Band will present a free outdoor concert featuring music from the American songbook in honor of the country’s 250th anniversary.

No advance reservations or tickets are required.

The museum said selections will range from patriotic marches to American folk songs to film favorites.

Highlights include patriotic tributes such as The Star-Spangled Banner, Armed Forces: The Pride of America and The Fourth of July, alongside American heritage and folk works including Copland’s Grover’s Corners, Shaker Variants and Homeward Bound. The concert will also feature stage and screen classics Them Basses, 76 Trombones, Pure Imagination and music from The Wizard of Oz.

Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

The band, revived from the original town ensemble that played from 1886 to 1910, is in its 51st year. The band has grown to more than 50 members, providing summer and holiday concerts to shoreline and River Valley communities.

The museum will be open for its regular hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  1. I would like to share another highlight of Sunday’s concert. For our 50th anniversary concert last April, composer Anthony Susi created a three- movement piece entitled “Impressions of Old Lyme” inspired by three works seen in the Florence Griswold Museum: “The Ledges,” “Peonies,” and “Kalmia” (that’s Mountain Laurel, our state flower). The piece””” was well received at our gala concert, and Susi will be returning to conduct it this Sunday, along with another of his compositions, “A.S.B.D.A. Jubilee March.” Come Sunday to learn what this acronym stands for!
