What AI Is … and Isn’t: Old Lyme Library Talk to Explore Hype and Reality of Artificial Intelligence
A community session at the Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library will examine the real-world uses and risks of AI.

OLD LYME, CT – The Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library will host technology expert Bill Fitzgerald on Wednesday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. for a community conversation on artificial intelligence as he explores what it is, what it isn’t, and why it matters.
Titled “Everything and Anything You Wanted to Know About AI But Were Afraid to Ask,” the session is about separating legitimate claims about AI from hype, as well as how the technology manifests in daily life.
In this conversation, Fitzgerald will explore:
- how to tell the difference between misleading marketing and valid claims about AI’s capabilities
- how AI makes fraud and scams more dangerous
- what work (and school) looks like when teachers, students, bosses and employees use AI
- AI in writing, video, audio and other forms of art
- real risks of AI
The overview is geared toward a general audience, with no technical background required. Fitzgerald promises plenty of internet jokes and images to make the sometimes daunting topic easier to understand.
The rest of the session will be guided by questions from the audience.
Fitzgerald identifies himself as a technologist, researcher, software developer, privacy advocate and educator who has “spent way too much time building, using, thinking about and breaking technology.”
Register online through the library’s website.
