Paddle Into Sunset with Old Lyme Land Trust as Tree Swallows Gather Over Goose Island
Experienced kayakers are invited to a sundown paddle Sept. 20 to witness a spectacular tree swallow murmuration.
OLD LYME, CT – The Old Lyme Land Trust will host a guided sunset kayak trip on Sunday, Sept. 20, to coincide with the spectacular tree swallow murmuration over Goose Island.
The paddle will depart from Pilgrim Landing off Route 156 at 5:30 p.m. Organizers say thousands of tree swallows gather at Goose Island to roost each evening around sunset, which is slated for 6:50 p.m.
Because the tide will be ebbing after 7:30 p.m. and darkness will be approaching, the trip is recommended for experienced kayakers who are comfortable paddling in those conditions. Participants must bring a life jacket and headlamp.
Parking and kayak launch access are available at the site, but space is limited to 20 vehicles. Advance registration is required. Sign up online or by emailing ollandtrust@gmail.org.
The event is hosted with support from The Watershed Fund, publisher of Estuary magazine. Donations to the Old Lyme Land Trust are welcome.
