Letter to the Editor: Former Selectwoman Says Commission Appointment is Not in Best Interest of Town
Judith Read raises concerns about legal costs, unresolved disputes, and the decision to appoint someone involved in a threatened lawsuit that names her, among others.
To the Editor:
I am writing to share my disappointment and dissatisfaction on a recent appointment made by our Selectman Martha Shoemaker and Jim Lampos (John Mesham did not vote to approve) which does not make sense to myself and many others.
First, I would like to say that I feel it is an honor and a privilege to serve on a board, committee, or commission for the town of Old Lyme.
At the last Selectman’s Meeting on January 26, 2026, someone who is threatening the Town, several elected officials and volunteers with a lawsuit, was appointed to serve on the Affordable Housing Committee.
I am one of the people named in the potential lawsuit.
The Town has already spent thousands in legal fees regarding this dispute and potential lawsuit.
I for one feel bullied and threatened and don’t think this person should be appointed to serve on any board, committee or commission until the dispute is settled and the threat of the lawsuit withdrawn.
I do not think that the decision to appoint this person is in the best interest of the town, AND it has ALREADY cost the town thousands of dollars.
I was told that one reason this person was appointed was because there were no other applicants. REALLY. What is the urgency? Out of respect for your fellow elected officials, volunteers and taxpayers PLEASE leave the seat open rather than appointing the person who is threatening us with a lawsuit
I also have a question. What is the status of the dispute over Tantummaheag Landing. It has been almost three years and still no movement!
Sincerely,
Judith Read
Former Old Lyme Selectman
