Death Announced of Susan S. Campbell of Old Lyme, Retired Educator and Community Volunteer
Susan S. Campbell, 82, a deeply community-oriented mother and grandmother, passed away on May 21.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Susan Schaffer Campbell, 82, of Old Lyme, on May 21, 2026.
Born Oct. 28, 1943, in western Pennsylvania, Sue was the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Schaffer. She graduated from Slippery Rock State College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1965.
Sue began her career as a teacher at Gales Ferry Elementary School in Connecticut. This is where she met submariner Robert “Soupy” Campbell, whom she married in 1970. They built a house in Old Lyme, and in 1975 welcomed daughter, Mandy. Sadly, Soupy passed too early in 1994.
Due to Soupy’s work, the family moved to Vicksburg, MS, and Frederick, MD. Their goal was always to return to the home they built in Old Lyme. After working as substitute teacher in Frederick, the family, at last, returned to their home on Wildwood Drive in Old Lyme. Here, Sue’s commitment to students and education continued until her 2003 retirement.
Being an active member of her community was important to Sue. Sue belonged to several community organizations, including the Eastern Star (Bay View), Old Lyme Fire Department Auxiliary, American Legion, and the Lymes’ Senior Center, where she served as a board member. She also volunteered as a Meals on Wheels driver, always willing to lend a hand to those in need.
Sue is survived by her daughter, Mandy Campbell-Berry, and her son-in-law, Rob Berry, along with her grandchildren, Audrey, Ava and Oliver. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert C. Campbell.
