Recycle Your Small Gas Cylinders for Free at Old Lyme Transfer Station

Under a new state law, it’s up to manufacturers to handle proper cylinder disposal. A group called the Cylinder Collective oversees local collection and recycling.

OLD LYME, CT – The Transfer Station is now collecting refillable and single-use gas cylinders under 20 pounds at no cost to residents.

The Old Lyme Waste and Recycling Committee in a news release said residents should place smaller cylinders in the transfer station’s collection bins. Cylinders on the larger end of the 20-pound limit should be left on the ground directly next to the bins.

The pressurized cylinders are commonly used for camping, grilling, do-it-yourself projects and celebrations requiring portable propane and butane, hand-held torches, and portable helium, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The program is the result of the state’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law that makes producers of certain products responsible for ensuring proper disposal. The local collection is managed by the Cylinder Collective, a group of cylinder manufacturers authorized by the state to pick up, transport and recycle cylinders sold in Connecticut.

Propane, butane, isobutane, helium and propylene cylinders will be accepted. The program does NOT accept industrial, commercial or institutional gas cylinders; fire extinguishers; candle or cigarette lighters; vapes; or cylinders containing acetylene, carbon dioxide, ethylene, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, oxygen, refrigerants, and spray foam insulation/adhesives.
