What’s the best way to get rid of a Halloween pumpkin in Lyme and Old Lyme? By launching it into the Lyme Old Lyme Food Share Garden compost pile.

On Sunday, Nov. 1, local garden volunteers will use a trebuchet to toss the big, orange gourds into the compost pile. The event builds on the popular pumpkin chunkin’ phenonemon benefit a good cause: healthy, local food.

The event will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. behind the field house at Town Woods Park, 30 Town Woods Road.

Volunteers have said the event offers families a fun way to recycle their Halloween pumpkins.

The pumpkins break down through the composting process into nutrient-rich soil that will help the Foodshare garden grow produce for donation to the Gemma Moran United Way food distribution program and the Shoreline Soup Kitchen and Pantries.

Only unpainted pumpkins will be accepted.
