Taiyo Gemme Heads to New England Wrestling Championships After State Open Title

Lyme-Old Lyme High School junior Taiyo Gemme, a wrestler for 10 years, claimed his first Connecticut State Open championship on Saturday.

LYME/OLD LYME, CT – Lyme-Old Lyme High School junior Taiyo Gemme captured the 215-pound championship at the CIAC Connecticut Wrestling Open State Championship, pinning Julian Rousseau of Staples High School in 1:37 in the title match.

Gemme finished the season 28-0, with all but one victory by pin or technical fall. At the Class S wrestling championship on Feb. 21, he defeated Thomas Johnson of Canton High School in an 8-7 decision.

The state champion will travel to Providence, R.I., this weekend to compete in the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships.

This is Gemme’s first State Open championship.
