OLD LYME, CT – On Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., the Lyme-Old Lyme Partnership for Social Justice will host “We the People: A Day of Creative Assembly” on Lyme Street.

The free, family-friendly community event invites neighbors of all ages to make protest art, raise their voices and connect with one another ahead of the statewide No Kings rallies on March 28.

Located at 10 Lyme Street, home to the Lyme and Old Lyme Democratic Party headquarters, the gathering is free and open to the public.

The group in a news release said the afternoon will feature hands-on art-making stations, from kid-friendly poster making and sidewalk chalk to large-scale banner painting and the construction of a collaborative papier-mâché puppet.

Organizers said all art created at the event can be carried by attendees at the upcoming rallies.

Attendees can also decorate t-shirts and tote bags, make buttons and pins, write postcards to Connecticut elected officials and sign up to attend upcoming civic actions. Food, hot chocolate, coffee and live music will be available.

Gavin Lodge, Lyme resident and event coordinator, described creativity as a vital tool of democracy.

“This event is for everyone – Democrats, Republicans, independents, people who’ve never been to a rally in their lives,” he said. “If you care about community and democracy and you want to do something, come make something with us.”

A stage program running throughout the afternoon will feature student readings and poetry, a community Singing Resistance session with call-and-response protest songs and brief remarks.

In case of rain or snow, the event will move to the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. A decision will be announced by 7 p.m. Saturday. More information is available here.

The Partnership for Social Justice is a community organization based in Lyme and Old Lyme dedicated to civic engagement, creative expression and grassroots organizing.
