Musical Masterworks Explores ‘The Sacred and the Profane,’ March 14 & 15
The concerts at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme feature chamber works from Debussy, Bach, Britten and more, with pre‑concert talks.

OLD LYME, CT – Musical Masterworks continues its 35th season in March with a weekend of chamber music performances titled The Sacred and the Profane.
The program, led by Artistic Director Tessa Lark, takes place Saturday, March 14, at 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 15, at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on the corner of Lyme Street and Ferry Road in Old Lyme.
Pre-concert talks with the artists will be held 45 minutes before each performance.
Lark will be joined by harpist Bridget Kibbey, violinist Chad Hoopes, violist Matthew Lipman and cellist Mihai Marica.
In a news release, Musical Masterworks said the program spans centuries, tracing themes of devotion and desire, ritual and rebellion, and light and darkness. Featured works include Claude Debussy’s Danses sacrée et profane; Johann Sebastian Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor in an arrangement for solo harp; Benjamin Britten’s Lachrymae; and John Dowland’s Flow My Tears. The program also includes music by Henriette Renié and Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, as well as Kibbey’s own Bards and Griots.
The concert concludes with André Caplet’s The Mask of the Red Death, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe.
