From Family Forts to Funny Films: There’s an Activity for Everyone in the Week Ahead

Wildlife programs, robotics workshops, and history talks are among the options for residents ranging from young children to older adults.

LYME/OLD LYME, CT – Whether you’re 55 or better, 18 and under, or somewhere in between, programs coming up over the next week in Lyme and Old Lyme offer something for all ages.

At the Phoebe

Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library, 2 Library Lane, always has lots of free options.

From 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center will present “Winter Creature Feature,” introducing ambassador animals and exploring how wildlife adapts during the winter months.

On Feb. 20, families and teens are welcome to attend Friday’s Family Fort Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Participants can build cozy forts and enjoy the library after hours. Children under 12 must attend with an adult.

Register for Creature Feature and Fort Night online, or call (860) 434-1684.

At the Lyme Public Library

Over at the Lyme Public Library, 482 Hamburg Road, kids ages 6 to 11 can explore the Cool-ology Coding and Robotics Lab on Saturday, Feb. 21.

From 11 a.m. to noon, the program will introduce basic coding and robotics concepts through hands-on activities using mini robots such as Dash, Cue, Sphero, and Bee Bots.

At 1 p.m. Sunday, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Janet Roach will host the laugh-out-loud “Just for Fun” film series for adults. This installment features the 1997 satire “Wag the Dog,” directed by Barry Levinson and starring Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. Movie refreshments will be served.

Registration is required for these free programs. Sign up online or by emailing programreg@lymepl.org. Space is limited, and it’s filling up fast.

For the 55 and Better Set

Among the programs at the Lymes’ Senior Center, 26 Town Woods Road, Old Lyme, are two thought-provoking programs on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 23 and 24.

At 1 p.m. on Monday, Mallory Howard will present a historical lecture, “The Radium Girls,” exploring the true story behind a landmark workplace safety case.

Tuesday’s Curiosity Club, also held at 1 p.m., will explore “Why Our Brains Need Friends,” led by Jude Carter, with short videos and guided discussion on social connection and brain health.

Both programs, open to adults ages 55 and older, are free for members and $10 for non-members. Register by calling (860) 434-1605, ext. 241.
