The true question should be how many students enter K without a preschool experience. This expansion will have a grave negative impact on local preschools who often have a more established curriculum, highly qualified certified teachers, and much greater regulated programs. There is room because of the decline in birth rates and children in town. How many kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms are there currently in the district? How can these numbers support the addition of four preschool classrooms? What is the cost to open and run these classrooms? How will the town financially support this change? This seems like a solution for the town to keep tenyeared teachers more so than to ensure a preschool experience for all.
