It is with great sadness that we learned of the death in Yale-New Haven Hospital this past Monday, Sept. 7, of our dear friend Charles "Chuck" A. Graeb.  Friends may visit today (Saturday) from 3 to 5 p.m. at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook. Regardless of your political persuasion, there is no denying that Tuesday was an historic day.  Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States of America.  Many of  the inauguration speeches emphasized the fact that this was yet another peaceful transition of power.  How does this happen?  It is because we vote, and last year we voted in record numbers, many for the first time.  But one lady we know voted in November 2008, at age 97, for the twentieth time, in person, and yes ... for Obama!  Here's her story as told by her son, David Holahan. Read More ...

Constance "Connie" Pike died peacefully in Boston last Saturday.  Mrs. Pike called Old Lyme home for many years and was intimately involved in numerous projects in the town in a volunteer capacity. At a "retirement" party held in her honor in October 2006, then Chairman of the Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library Board of Trustees David Winer decribed Mrs. Pike simply as "a remarkable woman." Read More ...

Vanity Fair has announced the death of Hadlyme summer resident Dominick Dunne, 83, in Manhattan Wednesday. Fofoga Timoteo, mother of Old Lyme resident Naima Douglas, lost her life last Thursday, Oct. 1, when a tsunami devastated parts of American Samoa. This tragedy was followed Sunday, Oct 4, by the death of Douglas' husband, Tom, who passed away after a long illness. The Douglases have two children, Margaret, who graduated from Lyme-Old Lyme High School in June of this year and Seamus, a junior at the school. Read More ...

Robert Mulligan, 83, who was nominated for an Academy Award for directing the 1962 film "To Kill a Mockingbird," died Saturday at his home in Lyme.  The film was nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards.  Mulligan is also credited with launching the career of Reese Witherspoon in his final 1991 movie,  "Man in the Moon." Read More ...
