Lyme-Old Lyme High School graduate Caitlin Kelly is directing a reading of ‘The Vagina Monologues’ tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the Old Lyme-Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library. All are welcome and a $10 donation per person is suggested.
The play, written by Eve Ensler, is an episodic play that delves into consensual and nonconsensual sexual experiences, body image, genital mutilation, direct and indirect encounters with reproduction, sex work, and several other topics through the eyes of women with various ages, races, sexualities, and other differences.
The production by the BIA Theatre Ensemble features Sigrid Forsythe, Samantha Kolb, Frances Ramos, Kiialeah Rumer, and Monique Scott with narration by Caitlin Kelly. The Bia Theatre Ensemble is an emerging theatre company based out of New York City, aimed at producing theatre work with graduates and artists that are new to New York.
Ninety percent of donations from the performance benefit the Spot Light Campaign and Safe Futures in New London.
The specific location for Safe Futures, which has asked to remain anonymous for safety of their current occupants, operates two 24-hour hotlines, an emergency shelter, and transitional living programs for families working to rebuild lives shattered by domestic violence or sexual assault.
In addition, Safe Futures provides counseling and advocacy, case management, court support services, support groups, and educational programs for schools and community groups. All 21 cities and towns in New London County are served by the agency.
